Through adoption of homeless pets, humane education, abuse investigation, and community outreach and leadership, we match pets and people. There are many places to acquire a dog or a cat, but our shelter is special. Before you adopt your companion animal from us, the Animal Protection Society will:

  • Treat the pet for internal and external parasites
  • Give them all initial vaccinations
  • Spay or neuter the pet
  • Test all cats for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Leukemia Virus (FeLV)

Beyond all that, animals at the shelter are lovingly played with, socialized, and observed for all possible behavior problems. We care about our friends, and it shows! Learn more.

How You Can Help

Donate

Outright donations help us feed and take care of the shelter pets. Make a one-time donation, a monthly donation, or become a Shelter P.A.L. by making a yearly donation of any amount.

Volunteer

Volunteer opportunities are many, just to name a few: walking dogs, trapping feral cats, pet training, medical support, fostering pets, and volunteering time at Treasure Hounds store.

Treasure Hounds

Shopping at our upscale retail thrift store is another way to support us, so is donating gently used household furnishings, home goods & decor to Treasure Hounds.

We are hiring!

💔In Loving Memory💔

It is with heavy hearts that our APS-FH team shares the passing of our beloved Booba.

Booba was the super handsome, 16 year old, deaf & blind, cat living in the Senior Suite of our Community Cat Rooms who won over many a hearts! We were lucky enough to have Booba in our care from December 2022 up until last week, when after his quality of life took a downward turn, our staff made the decision to humanely euthanize Booba.

These decisions are never easy, nor are they made lightly. Yet, however hard these moments of loss are, we are repeatedly comforted by our ability to be there for these animals in their times of need — all the way till the end.

In his final days, Booba was kept as comfortable as possible, offered some of his favorite things, regularly visited by some of the community members, volunteers, and staff who have come to love him. May we always remember his love for being a lap cat, his teenager-like appetite, and all he taught us about the way he navigated the world.

Booba, we hope you know how loved you were, and that wherever you are now you are comfortable, and at peace. Missing you, big guy!

JASPER

Male, Shepherd/Mountain Dog mix, 6 months old, ~40lbs

Jasper is a super awesome pup that is looking for a new place to call home. His current guardians have nothing but great things to say about this good boy. Read their write up below to hear about how awesome he is:

Jasper is a fun, loving and amazing 6 month old pup! He is a tri-color shepherd mix whos eyebrows quite literally have people ooing and awwing! Hes a very sweet boy who becomes very comfortable with his people, just wait until you experience his morning cuddles and belly rubs! But he also loves to meet strangers. Hell say hi to just about everyone and then be right back with you ready for whats next. Hes about 43 pounds right now and still growing, but slowing down. We think hell end up somewhere between 55 and 65 pounds. Unfortunately, our schedules have changed and we cannot take this wonderful but excitable puppy to work with us. We are not able to provide this sweet boy with the physical or mental stimulation that he needs and are trying to find a home that can.

Jasper is eager to learn, engaged with training and has already mastered sit, down, shake, spin, turn, toch, eyes on me, and we are working on rollover! He has responded so well to all of the positive reinforcement training weve done and hed love his future home to continue with it! He understands heel and that he is supposed to not pull on leash, but his puppy brain forgets sometimes. His recall is coming along very nicely and he really responds well to his name. This boy loves to run, but hell make sure to check in with you if he gets too far ahead. We think he might have some kind of herding breed in him and can picture him being a great farm dog with a job to do or at least some space to spread his lanky legs. He has shown some prey drive, so he may not be the best fit for chickens. Jasper has met one cat when he was younger and was a bit afraid of it, as hes gotten more confident he might be able to make friends with one but we are unsure. Jasper LOVES playing with other doggos and does have a bit of a rougher play style. He does listen to other dogs boundaries (it may take a couple times though) and really looks up to adult dogs that do set their boundaries. We think another dog his size or larger with a tolerance for puppy energy would be a great addition to his life, but certainly not necessary.

We are looking for someone who has the time and space to help this young boy become the best dog we know he can be! Jasper would love space to be able to run, whether that be at home or closely monitored on trails. He is also quite smart and may even enjoy agility or something that provides a metal challenge. He loves puzzle toys and food enrichment he can sniff, scratch, dig and chew on! He has been working on his alone time and is okay for an hour or two but has a lot of physical and mental energy to burn. We think hed do really well alone for short spurts and unfortunately we cant provide that at this moment. Hes such a great dog and we want to find him a home where he can show that off!

I am happy to vouch for Jasper if anyone wants to ask questions! He and his people have been star students with me at Lucky Fido Dog Training!

I’m curious where this pup originated. We adopted a pup this year, and a couple of his litter mates looked like Jasper. Born 12/15/22. We might be interested to adopt…

~ PET OF THE WEEK~

Alley

Age: ~2 years old

Sex: Female

Breed: Domestic Short Hair, Grey & White Tuxedo

Origin: Eastern Washington

Weight: ~9lbs

Personality: Dainty, Comforting, Strategic

Energy Level: The good kind of energy that comes from self discovery and expression

Likes: My Nose Freckle, Head Boops, Cozying Up With Loved Ones

Dislikes: Crowded Spaces, Confrontation, Bad Roommates

Hi, I’m Alley! I’ve been at the shelter since April, and after a little over a month, I finally feel comfortable enough to come out of my shell, and show those around me my truest self. Before coming to APS-FH, I was living in a home with too many cats for one place. Living in that type of environment, with so many feline personalities, made being true to myself a little tough. It was easier to be quiet, and reclusive, than to accidentally cause a “scene” with any of my cat roommates; not that I’m someone who causes trouble, but personalities are bound to clash with so many of us living together. Then one day, someone came and took some of us out of there, and that’s how we found our way to the shelter; my two roommates here are Mac and Hans, and they too came from that same home. Mac is the most extroverted of us 3, and through his charisma and friendship, I now feel safe enough here to show everyone who the real Alley is!

Nowadays, I spend my time making and strengthening new friendships with my fellow cats, getting to play in the sunshine of our outdoor catio, finding my favorite nap spots in our room, and getting to meet (and receive pets from) the friendly humans who come to visit us. I’m hopeful that by showing these people the real me — the sometimes-shy, always-sweet, happy-to-tag-along, friendly gal that I am, that they’ll fall in love with me and take me home with them. Could you be the one(s) to love an “Alley-cat” like me? If so, come meet me (and the boys) in Community Cat Room #3 at APS-FH!

If you are interested in adopting, come by the shelter for a visit, or you can fill out and submit our Feline Adoption Application on our website:

Be still my heart…

beautiful

Can you believe these two black beauties are still available for adoption? Cause we can’t!

Ellie and Joel are two, 6month old, litter mates who are all the best parts of kittens without being itty bitty. These two have really come into their own while here at the shelter; they’re easy-going, playful, silly, affectionate, and always down for a fun time — especially together!

Although Ellie and Joel are a bonded pair, they’ve proven themselves to be good with other cats joining their fold, and therefore could go to a home with other accepting cats.

All of our cats, including these two, can be visited during our regular business hours (Tuesday-Sunday, 11am-4pm), and if you’re interested in adoption, you can fill out our Feline Adoption Application at the link below:

Nothing like a bonded sibling pair of different genders. Only thing better is two brothers and one sister of same litter, eh?

Amanda Cooper

Our cats appreciate their morning room cleans, and freshening up of their toys, but sometimes they just want to do it themselves 😂

Here’s Mac picking out his own toys this morning! Fun fact: Mac’s #1 favorite toy is always the Yeowww! Catnip Banana 🍌

Mac is currently available for adoption! If you’re looking for a cat who is a social butterfly, very loving, and playfully silly, this boy may just be the one for you 💕

Jerry

Age: ~6 months old

Sex: Male

Breed: Terrier Mix

Origin: Mexico

Weight: ~15lbs

Personality: Brave, Scrappy, Genuine

Energy Level: Medium

Likes: Summer Season, Relay Races, Belly Rubs

Dislikes: Long Travel Days, Strangers

Oh hello, I’m Jerry. Don’t let the gray hairs, or the knowing look in my eye, fool you into thinking I’m an old man; on the contrary, I’m still just a pup! The reality is that my “old soul” look comes, not from age, but from already seeing such hardships in my first few months of life. When we were just babies, me and my two litter mates were left on the side of the road in Mexico. We were so hungry, so lonely, and so very scared; by the time we got picked up, we were malnourished, and missing the socialization we as puppies desperately needed.

Going through so much at a young age is enough to make anyone’s hair gray prematurely, and after sitting back and hearing my story, you may wonder how I have any hope left at all. Well new friend, I’ll tell you! It’s because when things get really, really low for me, like they have been before, I just focus my mind on all the positives, and I look for the good people all around me, who are ready and willing to help. I try my very best to put the bad people out of my mind, and instead remember all those who helped me and my siblings find safety, security, and love again: I think of the kind soul who first found us on the side of the road and picked us up; the compassionate team at the Mexico shelter who helped us find our strength again; the fosters we had along the way who helped us get back on our feet; and now, the team at APS-FH who are always showering me in love, care, and hope for my future. When I’m feeling down, I think of all these people, and I remind myself that I am worth fighting for, worth saving, and oh so worth of love.

Now that I have made the journey from Mexico to the San Juan Islands, my biggest hope is that I will find another person(s) to add to my good people list: someone(s) who will adopt me! Now that I know kind people are out there, I hope I get lucky enough to be adopted by someone like that a one day: a family and a home of my very own!
