APS-FH offers courtesy posting as a valuable service that helps connect pets in need of homes with potential adopters without the pet having to enter the shelter.
This program assists individuals in finding new homes for their pets due to unforeseen circumstances.
APS-FH will not courtesy post animals that were transported to the island specifically for adoption.
Our criteria for helping with placement are:
- Must be 18 years of age & owner or Power of Attorney of pet
- Must be a San Juan County resident
- Must be spayed/neutered & up to date on all vaccinations
- Must provide accurate information about pet’s health and behavior history
The above qualifications must be met at the time of posting, or the post will not be made.
We ask owners to provide high quality pictures or videos of the pet, along with a short informational biography of the pet. The pets’ story and unique qualities can significantly increase the likelihood of adoption.
We will create a post on our website, Instagram and Facebook pages – the social accounts get a great deal of traffic. You can opt in to have your contact information displayed on the post. If there are inquiries, we will very briefly screen and refer them directly to you. Any adoption decision is your responsibility, and we will have no further involvement.
We ask the owner to provide updates if the pet is adopted or if its status changes. We will check in periodically to inquire about status, if we do not hear back, the post will be removed.
If you would like APS-FH’s assistance in finding a home for your pet and you can meet our courtesy post criteria above, please fill out this form below. Call (360) 278-2158, or email shelter@apsfh.com if you have questions.

Tips for Rehoming a Pet on Your Own from Best Friends Animal Society
Rehoming a Pet | Best Friends Animal Society
1. Prepare the Animal for Adoption – To increase the chances of finding a home and the success of the new placement, it is important that the pet is:
- Spayed or Neutered
- In good health and up-to-date on vaccinations
- Clean and groomed
- House-trained and reasonably well-behaved
2. Advertise widely – Get the word out, in as many places as possible, to increase your chances of success in finding a new home. Social media is your best friend!
3. Get the pet out there – The more the pet is out and about interacting with people the more likely they will charm the right person (this works especially well with dogs). Take the pet on walks, to the pet store, or a neighborhood park. You can even put on a colorful bandana that says ‘Adopt Me’ or ‘Looking for a Home’.
4. Remind yourself that YOU are this pet’s best option for finding a new home – You might think shelters or rescue groups would be more adept at placing the pet because we have experience, facilities, screening guideline, etc. BUT, an individual, particularly one who knows the animal, can focus all his or her efforts on that pet, provide the most information to prospective adopters, and best determine the appropriateness of a new home.

Surrender
We urge pet owners to consider ALL options before surrendering their animal; however, we understand that there are times when keeping a pet is just not possible. We can only take in an animal when we have appropriate time to set up a success plan in best interest of the animal.
If you are needing to surrender your animal, please fill out the form below. Please note that completion of this form does not guarantee APS-FH can intake the animal.
