At the Animal Protection Society–Friday Harbor (APS-FH), we understand that veterinary expenses can create financial hardship for pet owners. Our Veterinary Assistance Fund helps eligible San Juan Island residents access necessary medical care for their cats and dogs when the cost of treatment may otherwise be out of reach.
Funding is limited and available periodically, based on available resources. Assistance is intended for pets with treatable medical conditions and a favorable prognosis for recovery. The fund does not cover emergency veterinary care, ongoing medication expenses, or long-term medical treatment.
All funding requests must be approved by APS-FH before veterinary treatment is provided.
Who Qualifies?
To be considered for assistance, applicants must meet the following income guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for San Juan County. Proof of income may be required.
Annual Household Income Limits
| Household Size | Maximum Annual Income |
| 1 person | $43,900 |
| 2 people | $50,200 |
| 3 people | $56,450 |
| 4 people | $62,700 |
| 5 people | $67,750 |
How to Apply
To request assistance, please submit the following information:
- Statement of Need: A brief explanation of your financial circumstances and why you are requesting assistance.
- Veterinary Treatment Estimate: A written estimate from a veterinary clinic or animal hospital outlining the recommended treatment and anticipated cost. Financial assistance is available up to a maximum of $1,000 per household, subject to available funding.
- Your Pet’s Story: A brief description of your pet, their medical condition, and how treatment will improve their health and quality of life.
- Photo: A clear, good-quality photo of your pet.
Please email your application information to director@apsfh.com.
Applications will be reviewed once all required information has been received. APS-FH will contact you regarding your request and any next steps. Submission of an application does not guarantee funding.
Important: This fund cannot assist with emergency veterinary care. All applications require a veterinary treatment estimate and advance approval from APS-FH before treatment takes place.
If Your Application is Approved
APS-FH will coordinate payment directly with the treating veterinary clinic or animal hospital. Funds are not paid to pet owners.
Following treatment, we ask that you:
- Provide a brief update on your pet’s recovery and well-being.
- Ensure the veterinary clinic or hospital submits a final invoice to APS-FH.
Our goal is to help pets receive needed veterinary care while supporting the families who love them.
